Around seven years ago, I photographed an event with a local DJ. His wife was taking photographs for him.

As the evening progressed, she peppered me with questions about our business, how much money we make per assignment, and how quickly we built it up. It was obvious she was looking for a quick fix. She admitted that she didn’t know how to properly use her camera yet. I asked her about her level of photography experience.

She pushed that question aside, and pressed again on the “shortcuts” to getting successful. After I told her that I do business coaching and consulting, she told me she wanted to start a photography business because, as she stated, “That’s where the money is.”

I told her that I’m not smart enough to figure out the shortcuts, but if you really want to have a great photography business, it helps if you’re a great photographer. She then asked what my coaching rates were. After I told her, she asked me a question only someone looking for a quick fix would ask: “How many lessons before I’m a great photographer?”

“I’ve been at this for sixteen years,” I responded. “I’ll let you know when I get there.”

To no surprise, I never received an email response back. I saw her two years later at an event, but this time she didn’t have a camera. I asked how her photography career was going, and she told me that she gave it up a long time ago.

“There’s just no money in it,” she explained.
